Why Mourinho told United not to re-sign Ronaldo

Why Jose Mourinho told Manchester United not to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo

.
Jose Mourinho told Manchester United bosses not to make a move for Cristiano Ronaldo over the summer because he wanted the funds to be spent on a defender, according to reports.
The Portuguese superstar surprisingly decided to quit Real Madrid, moving to Juventus in an £88million deal that will see him earn in excess of £500,000-a-week in Turin.
Ronaldo would have entertained a return to Old Trafford, but the Mirror report Mourinho felt United could not justify such a massive outlay – especially when he had made a defender his transfer priority.

United CEO Ed Woodward was ready to try and re-sign Ronaldo, despite his advancing years, and Mourinho is furious that those funds were not used to reinforce his back-line.
Ronaldo will return to Old Trafford this season after United were drawn against Juventus in the Champions League, and Mourinho expects his countryman to get a warm reception.
‘I think he [Cristiano] likes to come,’ Mourinho told United’s official website.
‘My feeling when we played with Real Madrid here was that he was happy to come back and was happy to play at Old Trafford, but he was also happy to score and to win.

‘He comes with a Juventus shirt, he went to Juventus to win the Champions League, he comes to Old Trafford to score goals and to win the match.
‘But Old Trafford likes him and Old Trafford will always react in a positive way to him, which is a great thing.’

Transfer update

Transfer: Chelsea tell Real Madrid price-tag for Marcos Alonso Chelsea have reportedly told Real Madrid the price-tag for their first-team defender, Marcos Alonso. According to Tuttosport, The Los Blacos have been told that the Spanish left-back won’t cost less than €60 million. The Italian newspaper claimed that Madrid are currently not ready to pay the fee for the 27-year-old and the Blues are not open to sell Alonso now. The report also claimed that the West London club doesn’t want Alonso to leave Stamford Bridge because the transfer window in Premier League has closed already and Chelsea don’t have any chance to sign a replacement if the defender joins the Santiago Bernabeu club. However, things could change next summer when Juventus could make a new attempt to sign Marcelo from Real Madrid. Tuttosport claimed that if Juventus signs Marcelo for a fee close to €50million, then Madrid would accept to pay €60million to sign Alonso from Chelsea.

Nigeria Must Account For Victims Of ‘Enforced Disappearance’, Says Amnesty International In a statement issued on Thursday to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the human rights group accused the government of holding several persons in secret detention facilities without charge or trial across the country. “So many families are still searching for loved ones who have not been seen for many years,” the Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Osai Ojigho, said. “In some cases, families live with the pain of not knowing whether their loved ones are alive or dead.” She added, “It’s time the government did the right thing – and either release these detainees or charge them with a recognisable criminal offence in a fair trial without recourse to death penalty.” Ojigho accused the government of using enforced disappearance as a tactic to “silence critics and instil fear” in civilian populations whom she said were facing the double threat of a...

England manager, Southgate speaks on Ademola Lookman choosing to play for Super Eagles

England manager, Gareth Southgate has said they are doing everything possible to stop Ademola Lookman from switching allegiances to play for Nigeria. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) are confident they can tempt the Everton winger, even though he is a regular for the Three Lions’ Under-21 side. London-born Lookman is eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his parents. But Southgate remains confident they can keep the 20-year-old, who had an impressive spell on loan at Germany’s RB Leipzig last season. “I know every country is quite aggressive in their recruiting and I know they have always had an interest in him, but he is playing and has been in our squads, the 20s, 21s. “So in terms of encouragement through game time, we are doing as much as we possibly can,” Southgate told the UK Mirror
